Split lines and allocation
Objective: Follow stated rules for splitting or combining lines.
Recommended first: Compound journal entries
Sometimes one account appears on several lines — for example two rent payments, or a customer paying two invoices. Some businesses prefer one line per account; others keep a line per document.
In this course, each exercise states whether split lines are accepted. If not stated, combine lines on the same account and side. The grader never accepts a different account just because the totals match.
Splitting can improve the audit trail — one Accounts Receivable line per invoice makes it obvious which invoices were paid. But splitting the same economic effect across different accounts to make totals work is never acceptable. A balancing 'plug' hides an error rather than fixing it, and the grader treats it as wrong.
Check your work
- Are all split lines on the same account and side?
- Does the exercise allow splits?
- Is there any line that exists only to make totals agree?
Studio rent $1,500 and storage rent $300 paid together. Where split lines are allowed, both may be recorded as separate Rent Expense lines.
| Account | Debit | Credit |
|---|---|---|
| Rent Expense | $1,500.00 | |
| Rent Expense | $300.00 | |
| Cash | $1,800.00 |
Common mistakes
✗ Splitting across different accounts to 'make it balance'.
✓ Never use a plug. Each line must reflect a real effect.
