Bookkeeper interview preparation
Objective: Structure clear answers to technical and situational interview questions.
Recommended first: Preparing for a bookkeeping skills test
Interviews for bookkeeping roles mix technical questions (explain accruals, walk through a reconciliation), situational questions (a supplier says they were not paid), and communication questions (explain a variance to an owner).
A simple answer structure
- Situation: briefly set context.
- Task: what you needed to do.
- Action: the specific steps.
- Result: the outcome and what you checked.
Interviewers often care as much about how you check your work as about the answer. Mention the controls you would use: reconciling, reviewing source documents, comparing with prior months, and asking when something is unclear. For situational questions, describe the steps you would take and who you would involve.
Check your work
- Did your answer include a concrete example?
- Did you mention how you would verify the result?
- Is every experience you described your own?
'Why don't we journalize outstanding checks?' — They are already recorded in the books; the bank simply hasn't processed them yet.
Common mistakes
✗ Answering with definitions only.
✓ Add a concrete example and a check you would perform.

Item 1 of 1
When is revenue recognized?
Under accrual accounting, a landscaper signs a contract on May 2, mows the lawn on May 10, sends the invoice on May 12, and is paid on June 5. When is the revenue recognized?
Independent practice
Try these without hints. Completing the lesson needs at least one independent item solved without revealing the answer.
Item 1 of 4

Reconcile the bank statement to the Cash account at month-end. Classify each unmatched item, compute the adjusted bank and book balances, and record only the adjusting entries the books need.
